Task 1: Contextual Clues
Match the headlines provided below to the correct excerpts taken from The Straits Times and write them down in the spaces provided. Explain your answer with support of the relevant textual evidence in the given excerpts.

But another homegrown institution threw up a stark difference between the two groups: national service (NS).
When the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) asked 2,000 citizens - half local-born, half foreign-born - if having a male child who has completed NS is an important characteristic of being 'Singaporean', 69 per cent of locals said yes. Only 43 per cent of foreign-born citizens did so.

The iPhone and iPad maker has boosted its brand value by 19 per cent in the past year to US$183 billion (S$233 billion), or 37 per cent of its market capitalisation, according to the annual BrandZ study by leading brands and market-research agency Millward Brown.







It is also the only Asian city in an international ranking of the top five cities to host conventions.
